Finding old friends who tolerated me here, and taught me things in my youth. Professionally: Computers. Software. Hardware. Security. Entrepreneurship. Work.
  1. ..been wondering the same. there seems to be such little activity here on the boards lately. i somehow managed to graduate with a degree in comp sci and have been working for the past 3 or so years in software. recently transitioned into product management. I've been living in the sf bay area for the past 2 1/2 years and am loving it. weights are only a minor part of my life now, as i've found that in this area there are many, many, many other things one can do that are just as, if not even more enjoyable- rock climbing, hiking, kiteboarding, surfing, etc. ]
  2. Checking in

Turning 15 in a few months... just started driver's ed. Can't wait to get my permit. Just stopped by, thought I'd say hello, and have a few laughs (or maybe face-palms) at some old threads while I was at it. Haven't seen any posts in a few years. Anyone still around? Have all the cool kids moved to another forum?
  3. What happened to everyone? 3+ years later?

  5. Dieting with Resveratrol

would any biochem experts care to weigh in on this?
  6. Dieting with Resveratrol

what i don't understand is if resveratrol has a bioavailibility of 0, then how is it that there is a strong correlation between resveratrol consumption (as in red wine) and health benefits?
  7. Jesus

velikimajmun: that dancing jesus still has me laughing
  8. 419 - the revenge

i love that site. if nigeria one day just disappeared, i would not miss it.
  9. that thought isn't by any means crazy.
  10. Trading/Investing - Stocks

i've been reading up on "pump and dumps" lately, and been wondering about the legality of those sort of things... suppose one were to find a penny stock that had recieved favorable mention in a news article, for example.. would it be illegal to purchase a bunch of shares and then send out a few million emails mentioning the fact that the company has been in the news lately and that it might be worth some further investigation? assuming you could legitimately send out millions of emails, is there anything illegal about this? from what i've been able to find in reading up on pump and dumps, as long as you have no affiliation with the company and are not directly promoting it (saying "buy this stock!"), it is in fact legal. is anyone familiar with the relevant laws here? where is the line drawn between intentional manipulation of the stock market and "innocently informing others of the news on a company"?
  11. Trading/Investing - Stocks

oh. and also i was curious as to the time resolution you use one your market data.. (by the minute, hourly, daily, ?) In searching for historical market data to expand my friends project, the best I could find was daily (open,close/hi,lo- i believe) --I was somewhat surprised at this. I'd debated writing a script to record hourly data.. do you think there'd be a use/market for that much information? --or would you consider it statistically insignificant?
  12. Trading/Investing - Stocks

Sure. I should have been more clear in the wording of the question. Sorry. Um. So, to rephrase: what text classification method did you chose? I suppose that in the grand scheme of things (project-wise), the method you're using is relatively inconsequential, as text classification has become somewhat of a trivial task (as far as the headlines go), but I'd seen some pretty clever techniques and impressive attempts at "understanding" the news articles to classify them in the readings and was wondering whether you'd "home-brewed" a system, or had just taken a "simpler" approach (yet typically still an effective one)- going the bayesian route, for example..? anyway, and as far as the discussion forum/newsgroup bot goes, I was interested in your classification approach there as well... Thanks for the link, btw. I've been slacking on the tech. lit since I graduated last year. I guess I've been giving my brain sort of a well-deserved vacation Will definitely give it a read though.
  13. Trading/Investing - Stocks

a buddy did a cs project sr year creating a news based trading system... after discussing it with him, i wound up doing quite a bit of research and reading up on a number of simliar projects... most performed slightly better than random (they were masters/phd projects).. his performed slightly worse than random (he had <1 semester). now, this was ~2 years ago so i'm sure progress has been made, but i haven't kept up with the research. can you elaborate a bit more on your forum bot and rss analyzer and how they integrate into the system as a whole? is there any newer research you'd recommend i take a look at?
  14. Trading/Investing - Stocks

Spook: When did you switch your investments over to cash? What led you to do this? Why I'm curious is that the may-june correction dropped my portfolio ~%15 ..were you able to avoid it, and if so, what indicators led you to recognize the upcoming crash? ...and a big hello to everyone here. i've been gone for quite some time
